Within the graph is shows the fatality rates and mechanisms of injury for the years 2024 to 2025. Construction Deaths are down by 30% on the year previous. However, these 35 fatalities are all from falls from height. Work at Height is inherently dangerous, and the statistics sadly confirm this. We are not learning, in fact, in my opinion the more we work at height, the more complacent we become to its dangers.
Every day, either at site or by just travelling around, I see workers putting themselves at risk while working at height.
One Hundred and Twenty-Four Workers fatally injured at work. 124! (Mostly) Men who didn’t get home to their families from work.
49 of those were over the age of 60. People we would think would know better than to put themselves in such scenarios, and not, the so called inexperienced, lacking awareness young people that come into our industry.
92 members of the Public were killed in work related accidents. 92! People who were not related to the accident or the activity, killed via a workplace accident.
Of the 35 deaths by falls from height, 23 were self-employed and 12 were employed.
Does this mean the self-employed take more risks?
Why?
To save money?
By choosing not to work safely, it cost a life! No job is worth that, surely.
Stats are stats and we are fortunate in that in all likelihood we did not know these poor individuals who have lost their lives, and no doubt destroyed the lives of their families. Through what is in most cases just a lack of awareness or saving a few quid.
Pay attention at work, look around, make sure your colleagues are doing the same.
Pay for the scaffolding, the MEWP, The Tower. Use the guard rails, use the harness and attach the lanyard. Wear the helmet / hard hat. All of which could be the difference between you going home at night to your loved ones and becoming a statistic.
